2006 WIAA Track And Field Championships: D1 200m

Saturday, June 3, 2006: Memorial Stadium @ UW-LaCrosse.Results.

To call any one event 'The Race' of the 2006 season is very tough and certainly open to differences of opinion. The Honor Roll covers many meets during the regular season and finishes the season at the Track and Field Championships in La Crosse. Many athletes and relay teams put forth outstanding performances that make covering the sport of track and field such a rewarding experience. Seeing distance runners fight through the pain of exhaustion, sprinters trying to defend or win back titles, jumpers in the groove setting a new 'PR', relay teams making the perfect exchange and throwers reaching a new plateau all provide inspiration to this web site as well as track fans all over Wisconsin.

One event that was a highlight of 2006 was the finals of the D1 200m dash. A sub-drama to that event was that one of Wisconsin's all time best runners Joanna Schultz had a chance to make history. However a field of talented finalists in the D1 200m would make that a very tough accomplishment. With 100 meters to go the sprinters came out of the turn with the result far from determined. Above [L-R]: Senior Kelly Shaw [ 2nd to Schultz in the D1 400m] of Stevens Point, junior Erica Scott of Waterford, junior Akaila Cabell of Racine Case, defending champion senior Joanna Schultz of Homen, ninth grader Kennaye Lewis of Milwaukee Vincent, senior Ellen Rohan of Green Bay Southwest [hidden] and senior Epiphany Williams of Milwaukee Bradley Technical.

With 90 meters remaining Lewis edges ahead while Cabell is even with Schultz.

With 70 meters to go Cabell and Schultz move up to challenge Lewis.

At about the 50 meter mark and with only seconds remaining in her high school career Schultz edges ahead and approaches history as the first girl to win championships in two events four years in a row. Schultz won in 24.94 while Cabell was second [ 25.06], Lewis third [25.20], Shaw fourth [25.69], Scott fifth [25.70], Rohan sixth [25.85], and Williams seventh [25.96]. Not pictured were Kelsey Katarow a senior from Hartland Arrowhead [ eighth, 26.10] and Lauren Seidl a junior from Green Bay Preble [ ninth, 26.21].
