Hudson High School 'Raiders' Preseason Practice

Monday, March 12, 2007 at Hudson

The I-94 bridge from Hudson leads travelers to the St Paul and Minneapolis metropolitan areas. Some of Hudsons competitions will be with schools from those nearby cities. The ice on the river indicates that winter is still holding on and that track and field will battle the elements. On Monday, March 12th, an unseasonably warm day gave hope that the new track at Hudson [below right] which is covered with a blanket of snow may be used sooner than most people had thought. Hudson placed second in D1 at the 2006 WIAA State Track and Field meet and returns most of the athletes who scored points in that meet. The following feature shows Coach Jamison Holum's practice on Monday of the second week of preseason practices. Hudson was on spring break during the first week of practice so the Raiders have practice time to make up. However, ten of the team members attended Disneys Spring training for Track and Field in Orlando, Florida, during their spring break.

Hudson High School has an athletic complex and a separate gym where the girls and boys teams can warmup and practice. Jamison Holum [above left] is the Hudson girls coach. Athletes [Above right] are pictured in one of the footwork/warmup drills.

Kristin Pelzel
a senior [above left] ran a 4:57.98 to place second in the D1 1600m at the 2006 WIAA State Meet. That event was won by Karen Greuel [2006 graduate] of Madison La Follette [4:57.78]. Sharyn Dahl [Above middle] a senior placed third in the D1 100m HH [14.99] and was the D1 State Champion in the 300m LH [44.26]. Senior Alex Johnson [pictured above right in the 'speed skater drill'] placed 5th in the D1 pole vault at La Crosse in 2006. Her height of 11' 00.00 was the same as fourth place finisher Brooke Przekurat of Stevens Point. Alex is an accomplished rock climber 1 | 2 | 3 and combines many of those skills in the pole vault event.

All athletes except the throwers were timed in the mile.

The unusual early March warm weather led to an outside workout. On the right is Nicole Bruegger a ninth grader who placed first in the mile run. She and a strong ninth grade distance group will push the 4x8 relay team which placed third behind Middleton and Waukesha West at the 2006 State Meet.
