Preseason Practice

Wednesday, March 7, 2007 At Janesville Parker

Track athletes at Janesville's two high schools practice in the gyms, hallways and basements during preseason workouts. However this will change in less than two years. Earlier in the school year the largest school referendum in state history passed in Janesville. It passed by a 57 percent to 43 percent margin after failing to pass in two previous attempts. Voters approved the plan to spend $70 million toward remodeling and expanding the city's two high schools. The previous record referrendum was $65.4 million [Wausau, 1999]. Included in the plan is athletic space equivalent to four gymnasiums at each high school. There will be additional space for activity and weight rooms. Future athletes and citizens of Janesville will benefit greatly from the outstanding community support demonstrated by the referendum vote.

On the right are three of the distance runners at Parker prior to an outdoor workout. Distance runners seldom see the inside of a building as they challenge the elements that a late winter and reluctant spring bring to the sport of track and field in Wisconsin. Although the snow cover in most of Wisconsin is significant sidewalks and most roadways are clear for the runners.

Weather forecasters have promised warmer weather for the second week of preseason practices.
