The Nelson - Daniel Classic is named after Whitewater High School Track And Field Coaches Phil Nelson and John T. "Jack" Daniel. They combined their love and enthusiasm for the sport of track and field and led Whitewater High School to eight Southern Lakes Conference Championships

Dave Hahn of UW-Whitewater and Mark Maas of Whitewater high school help in organizing the meet. Coach Maas [ upper left] is shown with Phil Nelson's daughters. Coach Nelson died during the last year and athletes and fans had a moment of silence to reflect on Coach Nelson's contributions to Track and Field. Also recognized was Taylor Falligant. Taylor was a junior at Edgerton High School. Last year at the State Meet she placed fifth in the D2 triple jump. Tragically Taylor died in an auto accident on her way to school on January 15th of this year. Her season best in the triple jump from 2006 was 1/4th of an inch away from the school record. Shawn Holmes [ upper right ] a former track athlete at UW-Whitewater opened the meet by singing the National Anthem.
