The hammer throw was first included as an Olympic event in the 1900 Olympics. The women throw a 20 pound weight. UW- Stout sophomore Kelly Schachtner [ Clear Lake] is pictured above throwing the weight. The 20 pound weight which is shaped like a shot put is attached to a handle by a short chain. The thrower grips the handle with both hands and swings the weight before initiating a spin prior to releasing the weight. Spectators keep a sharp eye on this event as an errant throw would be a headline in the next days paper.
