WIAA D1 Sectional At Waukesha North: Part 1

The Waukesha North D1 Sectional Meet was a showcase for some of the outstanding young athletes who have made their presence known this season. Brookfield Central won the North sectional by totaling 145 points. Similar to runnerup Milwaukee Bradley Technical the Lancers from Brookfield had a number of ninth graders who made significant contributions to their teams. Central placed first in 8 events.

The Brookfield Central 4x8 relay team started off the highly competitive meet by jumping to the top of the Honor Roll 4x8 relay list with a winning time of 9:25.27. The first three legs saw numerous lead changes before the Lancers took charge.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the State Meet on Friday, May 30 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of UW-La Crosse.


The HR leader in the LJ is ninth grader Chidera Obasih from Brookfield Central. Obasih [ right] won the LJ at Waukesha North with a distance of 17' 05'.75. Waukesha South athletes Jennifer Lehman [above left] and Marissa Watkins [above center] finished 2nd and 3rd. Lehman a senior had a LJ of 17' 04 while Watkins who is a junior jumped 16' 03.50 for third place.

Left: High hurdle winner Katelyn Malcore. Malcore placed second in the 300m LH's while Lehman won the LH. Lehman's time was 45.39 while Malcore recorded a 45.43.



Right: Pole vault winner senior Danielle Carrigan from Waukesha West. Carrigan had a winning vault of 11' 00. Carrigan was also a State Meet qualifier in the PV in 2007.

Left: With her time of 12.10 Jasmyn Hudgins moved to the top of the HR 100m list. The sprinters ran into a wind so her time was most impressive. As the meet progressed temperatures dropped. Jasymyn's sister Marlena [2nd from left above] came prepared and many of the spectators in T-shirts wished they had brought their coats.

Above: Jasmyn is pictured with her family. Hudgins had a busy night as she competed in the LJ, 100m, 200m and was the anchor on the 4x2 relay. She had a moment to relax with her family while watching the Bradley Tech 4x1 relay team win its race.

The State Record in the 4x2 is 1:41.49 set by Milwaukee Vincent in 2006. This year the Bradley Tech 4x2 relay team is ranked #1 on the HR 4x1 list with a time of 1:39.1 [HHT]. This time was run at the Ram Relays at Pulaski Stadium on April 22. At Waukesha North the 4x2 team won in 1:40.70. Leg 1 runner was Sharonda York [right]. Leg 2 runner was Dezerea Bryant [left].

Ninth graders impressed in many events. Brookfield Central ninth grader Hannah Trasser [below left] won the 800m run with a time of 2:18.71. Senior Cathy Randle [below right inside lane] of Wauwatosa West was second while teammate Susannah Fricker was third [below far right].

A Track Meet: The Final Act

A race within a race. The 4x4 relay signals the final act in the series of events called a track meet. The 400m leg is a test of endurance and speed with athletes giving it their all. In the picture above athletes are running the third leg of the 4x4. Waukesha West senior Jaleesa Akuoko is in second chasing senior Cathy Randle from Wauwatosa West. Below is a picture of the final exchange in the 4x4. Akuoko accelerates into the exchange zone as anchor Stephanie Grant prepares to take the blind baton exchange. The Wolverines of Waukesha West won the 4x4 with a time of 4:00.95 while Tosa West finished in second posting a time of 4:03.36.
