West Salem Panthers Preseason Practice

Each practice starts with a meeting in coach Krall's classroom. The room is across the hall from a bulletin board that highlights the impressive accomplishments of the West Salem girls track and field team. The West Salem Panthers and Brown Deer tied for the D2 Championship at the 2007 WIAA State Track and Field Meet.





Panther athletes with State Meet experience include [L-R] junior Kristin Stockheimer [4x8], junior Courtney Oldenburg [800,1600, 4x8], senior Rae Davis [4x4,4x8], and junior Lauren Unser [200,400, 4x4]. Courtney Oldenburg is pictured on the right after her outdoor workout.


Senior Carly Manske [above left] was a member of West Salem's 4x4 second place relay team at the 2007 State Meet. Unfortunately a knee injury during her basketball season will cause her to miss her senior season of track. She is the defending Coulee Conference 300m LH champion. Assistant coach Stacy Mitchell [above right] looks on as Nancy Winberg [above left] who is a Certified Personal Trainer installs a core workout routine for the boys and girls track teams. The core [abdominal, back, and oblique muscles] drills have a goal of leaving athletes

with a stable pelvis and spine by improving core stability and hip strength. Both Winberg and Mitchell are teachers at Western Technical College. Athletes worked in four groups with each group rotating through the core drills.


Left: Ninth grader Kelsey Novak will be a welcome addition to the Panther track team. She was the Coulee Conference champion in cross country for the 2007 season.

West Salem community members can use the West Salem weight room and indoor running track from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The running track overlooks the gym.




Lauren Unser [R] placed fifth in the D2 200m dash and second in the 400m dash at the 2007 WIAA State Track and Field Meet. Her 400m time was 57.74. Winner Angela Kaufmann of Bonduel recorded a 57.41. Courtney Oldenburg [above left] placed fourth in the D2 800m with a time of 2:17.40 and third in the 1600m [ 5:04.06]. Oldenburg has now qualified for State Meet competition in cross country, gymnastics and track.
