History Is Made: First Time Race Event At A MPS Meet

The 400m race generated quite a bit of excitement at the 2010 Milwaukee City Conference Indoor Championships. Bradley Technical runner Tahje Whittley [above left] inches ahead of Milwaukee King's Kiara Giles in the last 30 meters of the race. Coaches and spectators alike were caught up in the excitement of a closely contested finish. Whittley won in 58.07 while Giles was second in 58.92. Right: Milwaukee Marshall's Ciarra Jarrett pictured in her start of heat 3 finished fourth [1:00.64].

400m runners L-R: Kiara Giles [2nd, Rufus King], Tahje Whitley [1st, Bradley Technical], Amber Williams [Hamilton], Crystal Malone [Riverside], and Tori LeFlore [Riverside]. Below L-R: LeFlore [fifth in 1:02.75]] and Malone [a ninth grader was third in 1:00.55].

In contrast to the noise of the crowd during the 400m race the 55m preliminaries and finals generated a more reserved response as spectators watched one of Wisconsin's most respected athletes put on a display of sheer speed and power. Using a controled style of sprinting Bradley Technical's Dezerea Bryant left everyone in awe as she jetted down the straightaway during preliminaries posting a 6.95 [left and above]. Bryant is the co-holder along with graduated Tasha Allen of the State 100m dash record. Below: The start of the 55m finals which Bryant [#4] won.

Vincent athlete Sherice Hewett was a double winner. She is pictured above jumping 36' 06.50 in the TJ. Her other win was in the HH event [8.69].

The Bradley Technical 4x2 [winning in 1:44.98] served notice that they would again be a force in that relay event. L-R: Elexis Fuller Stewart, Derricka Wesley, Angelina Howard, and anchor Dezerea Bryant.

Above and right: The Bradley Technical team extended its lead on each leg of the relay. Despite a big lead anchor Dezerea Bryant ran all out as the Trojans from Tech started building the intensity they will need during the season. Relay events are always an adventure. Not all goes as expected. Milwaukee Riverside relay runner Dalisha Edmonds [below left] took a bad fall on her leg. Despite that mishap Edmonds displayed mental toughness and got up and sprinted closing the gap. She is shown handing off to anchor Mariah Robinson-Page [below right].
Rufus King won the 4x8 relay: Runners above L-R:
  • Monica Ellwood-Lowe
  • Tenday Moore [Vincent Vikings]
  • Colleen Sovey
  • Caroline Froh
  • Anchor Olivia Welk

In the 1600m race Alex Fendrich [left, Rufus King] was first while teammate Julia Straszewski [far left] was second.
