Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Kachel Field House on the campus of UW-Whitewater. Results

Milwaukee King senior Kiara Giles [Above] is pictured finishing the 400m race at full throttle as she broke the meet record of 1:00.16 set in 2001 by Waukesha West athlete Amy Dian. Giles face tells the story of the effort she put into this early season race as she accelerated in the final 70 meters to finish in a new record time of 58.68.

At the 2009 State Meet Giles finished 8th in the D1 400m finals. She has been consistent in her times and will certainly be an athlete to watch during the season. The electronic scoreboard above the track told the story of the last heat of the 400m. Right L-R: Giles, Claire Gordee [Wauwatosa East], and Leigha Hodge [Madison La Follette] round the turn after completing almost one lap of the two lap race.

Homestead junior Marissa Savitch set a new Meet Record in the 55m HH race. Jenny Socecka a former Madison Memorial athlete set the old record in 2004 with a time of 8.61. In the preliminaries Savitch recorded a 8.38 to break the record. Then in the finals she blazed to a 8.40 clocking. At the 2009 State Meet Savitch was the D1 HH Champion. Her previous 'PR' in the 55m was 8.52.

Below left: West Allis Central athlete Michaela Hubmann finished 6th in the HH finals.

Below right: Kristin Heckel [Waukesha West] and Paige Demos [Janesville Parker] in the preliminaries.

Hartland Arrowhead won the meet by outscoring two Illinois teams Niles West and Cary - Grove. Twenty-eight teams competed at the Kachel Field House. One of the most competitive races was in the 1600m run. Above L-R: Sara Monson [Madison La Follette], Haley Bauer [Cedarburg], Lauren Holtz [Homestead] and Megumi Hoshi of Niles West are shown in the first lap of the race. Hoshi who is a seasoned runner set the pace.

Coming off the last turn [below] Holtz took the lead only to have Hoshi mount a furious charge. With about 40 meters to the finish Hoshi caught Holtz but Holtz somehow found another gear and finished .44 seconds ahead of Hoshi.

Wheelchair Races

Part of WIAA Meets This Season

Devon Radloff a Craig sophomore athlete participated in a 1600m wheelchair exhibition race. Wheelchair competition will be held at the WIAA state track and field meet beginning with the 2010 season.

The WIAA Board of Control on Friday approved details for the wheelchair competition. Wheelchair athletes will compete with other wheelchair competitors in one division with separate events for each gender.

Participation in sectionals with an official time or mark will be required to advance to the State Meet in the 100, 400, 800 and 1,600 meter runs or the shot put.

Above L-R: 55m preliminaries with Danielle Barbian [Sussex Hamilton], Liz LeCaptain [Beaver Dam, Heather Bong [Arrowhead], and Micaela Creighton [South Milwaukee].

Left: Madison West sprinter Victoria Shanahan and Emily Mauermann [Janesville Parker].

Right: Maggie Slatter from Janesville Craig.

Below L-R: Finals of the 55m dash - Danielle Barbian [2nd, 7.35], winner Kellion Gordon [7.26, Niles West, Illinois], and third place finisher Heather Bong [7.39].

Arrowhead opened the meet by winning the 4x8 relay with a time of 10:04.99. Team members were [L-R]: Teagan Seneczko, Taylor McDowell, Annie Mitchell, Andie Zeman [800m winner in 2:22.87], and Delia Equitz.

Below: 4x8 lap 1 runners.

Sussex Hamilon's 4x2 blazed to a 1:49.51 time in winning that relay title at the Nelson Daniels Meet. Relay members were L-R: Danielle Barbian, Ashley Holicek, Jessica Rupnopw, and Ellen Buckley. Track meets are exciting enough but when you throw in the drama of making exchanges of a baton at top speed the stress level increases considerably.
