Capacity Crowd Witnesses Historical First At State Meet

Senior Kaley Wockenfus from New London [100m, 400m] and ninth grader Melanie Watson from Oconomowoc [800m, 1600m] became the first female athletes to participate in a wheelchair event at the WIAA State Meet.

Above: After warmups Melanie transferred herself to a non-racing chair while she awaited her events. Melanie is a member of the Oconomowoc track team and she accompanied teammates Olivia Radtke, Molly Pearcy, Carly Hall, Mandy Prom, Hannah Heidvogel, Katie Yaeger, Cassie Raduka, and Courtney Walden to the 40th Girls WIAA State Meet.

Wockenfus posted times of 29.10 and 1:58.15 in the 100m and 400m events. This improved her previous best times of 30.59 amd 2:03.32. In the 1600m event Watson posted a 5:48.85 to better her Homestead Sectional time of 6:16.07.
