The Iowa State Meet was held May 16-18th at Drake University in Des Moines. Illinois held their State Meet at Eastern Illinois University May 16-18.

Iowa runs the 4x100m Shuttle Hurdle and 1600m Medley relays as a regular part of dual and tournament meet competition. Those events were new for the Team Wisconsin athletes.

The 4x100m shuttle hurdle athletes finnished in third behind two teams from Iowa.

In the 1600m Medley and 4x 8 relays Team Wisconsin set Meet Records. Team Wisconsin's Rachel Atchison [East Troy] was named Female Athlete of the Meet as she won the 800m run and led off in the record setrting 4x8 relay event.

Team Iowa had held the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay [200, 200, 400, 1600] record which they set in 2007 [4:07.01]. Team Wisconsin's quartet broke that record by posting a 4:06.59. Team Wisconsin set another record by breaking the 2010 record set by Team Wisconsin in the 4x8 [9:16.33]. The 2013 Team Wisconsin 4x8 posted a 9:14.80 to write their names into the record book. Relay members above L-R: Rachel Atchison [East Troy], Bridget Murphy [Seymour], Nicole Schmidt [Menomonie], and anchor Alison Parker [Neenah]. Murphy's sister Alaina was a member of the 2010 Team Wisconsin 4x8.

River Fall's runner Paige Skorseth is shown above in the 3200m [left] and 1600m [right] races. The 3200m race was the first running event in the meet while the 1600m run was at the end of the meet. Skoseth took first in the 3200m run and 2nd in the 1600m race.

The Senior Spotlight Meet was the brainchild of John Nalley [above center] from Palentine High School in Illinois, who wanted to give prep track and field seniors from around the Midwest an opportunity to compete on the same stage. Nalley and Iowa's Dick Washburn [above left] who is from Muscatine brought the concept to fruition, and Illinois and Iowa competed in the inaugural Spotlight Meet in 1999.

Nalley's father G. Carlin Nalley [above right] is a long time track official in Illinois who helped officiate the 2013 Spotlight Meet. G. Carlin was named the Illinois High School Association Track Official of the Year in 2008.


Iowa has the 400m LH event instead of the 300m LH race. In college athletes will run the 400m LH event. Above left: Haley Rafferty in the 400m LH event. Above right: Tess Nelson in the 400m LH. Nelson finished 4th. Iowa took 1-3 in the 400m LH race.

Team Iowa's Courtney Sowle [above center] from Camanche High School who won the Iowa D2 400m LH 2013 championship was the winner in the 400m LH event at the Spotlight Meet. Iowa has D1, D2, D3, and D4 divisions with D4 being the largest division.
