Head boys and girls coach Doug Maughan is shown above and on the right addressing team members. 106 girls and 90 boys make up the Cardinal 2013 track squads. The Sun Prairie high school complex is only three years old and has outstanding athletic facilities. The Monday practice was shorter than usual because of the preseason banquet and the special The Life of an Athletic program conducted by John Underwood. The Sun Prairie program Athletes Committed is a growing group of student-athletes who have pledged to make wise choices regarding alcohol and drug use by adopting and adhering to the principles of a national initiative called "Life of an Athlete."

There are 19 coaches who work with the track and field program [this includes 10 volunteer coaches]. Each event has a coach plus an assistant coach so that athletes get plenty of attention. The weight room is staffed by assistant track coach Brian Kaminski and track athletes spend 30 minutes a practice in the weight room. After a warmup Monday's main event began. Preseason is a great time to introduce and begin practicing the handoffs that will make the difference in times and places for the sprint relay groups. Early season 4x1 relays can be a scenario for accident management.

Hurdles coach Justin Wilson [red hat] joined athletes on the hill climbs. Below: Coach Maughan joined the fun on one of the hill cycles.

About a mile from campus is a hill that will be remembered forever by Sun Prairie track and field athletes. During the first five weeks of the season the hill will be an opponent that athletes will work against. The hill is on Campfire Drive and features a long steep grade. Monday's workout included 10 cycles of running up the hill with a recovery period as athletes walked back to the start. The temperature was 72 degrees and sunny in San Diego but good old Wisconsin weather prevailed at the workout.

The distance athletes [left and above] used the hill as one of their running stations during their outdoor workout. The middle distance athletes and the throwers also worked separate from the dash and jumps athletes at the Campfire Drive workout.
