What If Wisconsin Had A True Team Meet?

The True Team format is meant to determine the top overall team, rather than individuals, in a track and field meet. In a True Team meet each team has a given number of competitors, with each competitor scoring at least one point unless the competitior is disqualified. For example at the Wisconsin Valley Conference True Team Meet in 2018 hosted by DC Everest at Stiehm Stadium each of the 7 teams had 3 competitors. The scoring was 21 points for 1st, 20 points for second, down to 1 point for 21st. Wausau West scored 704 points to win the 2018 Wisconsin Valley True Team Conference Meet. SPASH was a close second with 703.5 points followed by host DC Everest with 583.5 points.

In 2018 Hudson's True Team Meet was canceled by weather but in 2017 Hudson hosted 8 Wisconsin and Minnesota D1 and D2 teams with the scoring 24, 23, 22, down to 1 point for 24th place. Hudson won the 2017 True Team Meet with 884 points followed by Eau Claire North [744 points], and Osceola [690.5 points].

In 2018 Whitehall of the Dairyland Conference scored 1137 points to win the 2018 Dairyland Conference True Team Meet. Cochrane - Fountain City was second with 1013 points while Blair - Taylor took 3rd with 905 points. Also in 2018 In another 2018 True Team Meet Wilmot Union scored 721.5 points to finish ahead of host West Allis Hale who scored 616.5 points. New Berlin West was thrid in that meet with 603 points.

Minnesota True Team Championships

Our athletes absolutely adore the true team format, and so does their coach. They all fight through the end of their competitions due to 1 second or 1" being the difference between multiple points/places. Across the board, these are my favorite meets. With that said, the timing companies all have the ability to automatically score the meets. We work with PT Timing here and they have done it for years. Hopkins has their own timing system, and they even do it automatically - however they have also worked with Wayzata timing and they also have the ability to do it. For our typical meets over here, there are generally 1 relay team and 3 per individual event allowed for entries. That said - in an 8 team meet relays would be scored 32-28-24-20-16-12-8-4 (1 point per relay member), and in the individual events 1st place would be 24, then 23-22-21...3-2-1 for 2nd-3rd-4th...22nd-23rd-24th places. Any events that are not filled - those points are just lost.

In Minnesota there are 3 classes in True Team Competition, with the classes based on enrollment. Enrollments are reviewed on an annual basis, and alignments are revised each July by the True Team Committee.

Throughout Minnesota, there are 8 Sections in each Class, with the Champion in each Section Advancing to the State True Team Meet. As of 2018, all section 2nd-5th place teams will compete in a "paper meet" with the top four teams also advancing to the state meet as "Wild Card" teams. The state meet will consist of 12 teams per class per gender.

The Team Scoring Assumptions For Scoring The 2018 WIAA State Meet

Paul Tilleman's look at the 2018 WIAA State Meet shown below projects a True Team look at last years State Meet.

1. For Division 1 1st place scores 24, 2nd place 23, 3rd place 22,..., 24th place 1, 25th or higher 0. Treat the relays the same as all of the other events since there were 24 or 16 entries in the relays just like the other events. For Division 2 and 3 1st place scores 16, 2nd place 15, 3rd place 14, ... , 16th place 1, 17th or higher 0.

2. For Division 1 FS or DQ in running event prelims scores 0. NH or FOUL in field events scores 0. FS or DQ in finals of running events with prelims scores applicable finals place points, generally 10th place points of 15. For Division 2 and 3 generally 10th place points of 7.

3. In running events with prelims, places 1-10 scored on basis of finals places, disregarding prelim times. Places 11-24 or 11-16 scored on basis of prelim times.

4. Points for ties in PV and HJ divided among tied athletes, as in WIAA scoring.
