An outstanding group of 1600m runners competed at Boscobel. L-R: Brodhead -Juda ninth grader Shannon Klein was 7th [5:27.22], junior Courtney Oldenburg from West Salem was 5th [5:13.94], senior Ann Tank of Dodgeville - Mineral Point was 3rd [5:11.95], first place finisher Ashley Beutler from Sugar River [Belleville-New Glarus] set a track record [5:06.27], Pardeeville junior Samantha Bluske was 2nd [5:11.72 -this time also broke the track record of 5:11.82 set by Heather Murphy of North Crawford in 1991], sophomore Taylor Hickey of Wisconsin Dells was 4th [5:12.20[ while teammate Stacey Swatek a ninth grader from the Dells finished 6th [5:19.75].

It seems hard to believe that Ashley Beutlers high school running career will be over after this years State Meet. When a young ninth grader from New Glarus finished first in the 2004 WIAA Division 3 State Cross Country Meet a signal was sent to the rest of the State that a new force in running had arrived on the scene.


In her sophomore season Beutler served notice that she would challenge all divisions when she shocked a talented 1600m field at the W/TFA to win that event with a blazing finish.


Beutler holds the D2 State Record in the 1600m which she set at the 2007 State Meet. She returns to La Crosse as defending champion in the D2 1600m and 3200m events. As the final chapter closes on the UW-La Crosse track and stadium facility it will be exciting to see what Beutler has in store for her final high school appearance in track.

Ninth grader Kelly Stewart from Amery is pictured above helping Amery to a third place finish in the 4x8 relay event. Stewart competed in the 400m, 800m, LJ, and 4x8 relay events at the Medford D2 Sectional Meet. Stewart posted a 58.66 in the 400m to win that event and qualify for the State Meet.

Junior Kayla Wagner from Baldwin-Woodville won the 1600m and 3200m events at the Medford D2 Sectional. Her times of 5:08.69 and 10;59.65 put her at #7 on the 1600m list and #2 on the 3200m list for D1-D3. At last falls State Cross Country Championships she finished 7th in Division 2.
