Maya Vazquez a junior at Arcadia made her mark in the field events during week 1. Week two saw the 200m and 400m records fall at the Blue Devil High School open held at UW-Stout on Friday, March 27.
Vazquez is the defending D2 400m champion. At the Blue Devil she broke Rachel Albecht's record in the 400m [1:02.69, 2005] by posting a 1:02.24.
In the 200m Vazquez sprinted to a 26.55 clocking in breaking Briana Berg's [Arcadia] 2005 record of 27.53.
In the 2008 State Meet Vazquez finished second to 200m champion Tasha Allen of Milwaukee North. This season Allen and her Milwaukee North teammates have moved to D1 status. However plenty of D2 competition waits for a chance to replace Allen as a D2 champion.
In the picture above Vazquez is shown in the 100m D2 preliminaries. All the athletes above return for the 2009 season L-R]:Hillary Hughes [12, Wisconsin Heights], Eileen Gehring [10, Madison Edgewood], Vazquez, and Carlye Schuh [Appleton Xavier].
Arcadia set a team record in the 4x4 relay at the Blue Devil Meet. In 2006 Rice Lake set the old record in the 4x4 of 4:23.30. This year the Raiders of Arcadia knocked over 4 seconds off the record by setting a new 4x400 record [4:18.90].
