WIAA D2 Sectional At Whitewater

Whitewater High School hosted one of four D2 sectionals. A standing room only crowd atteded the meet giving outstanding support to the athletes that were competing. Athletes finishing as one of the top 4 finishers in each event will advance to the WIAA State Meet for D2 on Friday, June 25, at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of UW-La Crosse. As the meet progressed the weather became a factor with a weather delay put into effect right before the 100m dash finals. Madison Edgewood won the meet with 54 points followed by Lodi [51], Brodhead/Juda [48], and Big Foot [39]. Thirty-one teams scored in the meet. Double winners were Sylvia Johansen [Clinton, 100, 200], Hailey Anchor [Wisconsin Dells, 400, 800], Madelyn Mcintrye [Brodhead/Juda, 1600, 3200], the Madison Edgewood 4x1 and 4x2 relays, and Annie Murphy [Big Foot, PV, TJ]. Wheelchair Athletes
Karissa Craddock [L] from Richland Center and Rachel Cleaver [R, photo from earlier season meet May 4 at Brodhead] from Beloit Turner competed in the wheelchair events. Craddock won the 100, 400, and 1600 meter events while Cleaver won the 800m and shot put events.
100m Dash
Defending D2 State 100m Champion and record holder Sylvia Johansen from Clinton won the 100m dash in 12.73. The photo above is from the prelims. Runners L-R: Kiersten Dellar [Watertown Luther Prep], Johansen, Nikita Lebbie [Madison Edgewood, 2nd in finals], and Myesha Thompson [Mount Horeb, 5th in finals]. Just as the 100m dash event was to begin a storm front moved in causing the weather delay..

4x800m Relay
The meet began under clear skies and high temperatures. However as the meet progressed a storm front moved in and when lightning was spotted on the horizon the 30 minute weather delay began. The nearby school gyms were the shelter area for the athletes. The 4x8 leg 1 runners above L-R: Emily Cody [Dodgeville/MP], Nora Wichman [Jefferson], Jaiden Dornaus [Columbus], Rhya Brandemuehl [Mount Horeb], Natalie Benish [Westby], and Dayna Karls [Belleville, New Glarus]. Mount Horeb won the 4x8 in 10:13.25 followed by Lake Mills, Dodgeville/Mineral Point, and Columbus.

Long Jump
Horizontal jump winners L-R: Columbus senior Molly Kahl jumped 18' 4.25 in trials [shown above left] and that distance held up for the win. Annie Murphy from Big Foot was second [17' 10]. The Big Foot junior went on to win the triple jump [36' 10] and the pole vault [10' 03].
